Orbiting the Giant Hairball
4book icon:

I'm reading a charming book called Orbiting the Giant Hairball, by Gordon MacKenzie. It's a book about how to thrive in the context of large bureaucratic organizations, written by a creative type at Hallmark, believe it or not. Aside from the sweet insight of his many stories, MacKenzie's central metaphor of orbiting is right on: It's a way to connect to a large institution and take advantage of its gravity without succumbing to it.

Leadership versus Management

Lazarus Consulting offers its take on the difference between leadership and management. Their take appears to be that leaders are change agents and managers are maintainers. I didn't expect this tired distinction to be thought provoking, but it is.

Censorship Wins Out

I do not believe in technological determinism, either good or bad. Hence, while I still have hope in the democratizing focus of the Internet, in the end, everything is about people. In Censorship Wins Out, Andrew Stroehlein looks at how nasty regimes have won out around the world.

IRS Oversight and Form 990

In the midst of the Enron affair and other corporate scandals of extraordinary proporations, I find the current report on IRS oversight of charities to be oddly timed. And yet, I agree with the particulars, especially the weakness of Form 990 (the U.S. federal reporting form for nonprofits) as a tool for assessing nonprofits in many really useful ways.

The Well Played Game
4book icon:

Bernie DeKoven's The Well Played Game is subtitled "A Playful Path to Wholeness." I'm not a big believer in competitive games (quite possibly because I can get very sucked into the competition), but Bernie turned a lot of that on its head for me. This book has enormous value for anyone whose job involves helping people have fun together, whether in work, or play, or in that ideal place where there is no difference.

NTEN Conference

Slow news week. I've been at the NTEN Circuit Riders Conference in, um, Orlando. The most signficant breakthrough, at first glance, is that a panel on standards and interoperability attracted four times as many people as a panel about online fundraising. In a very important way, that speaks to the growing vision and maturity of the nonprofit technology community.

Technology Support Index Assessment

The Technology Support Index assessment looks like an interesting tool. It's limitations are obvious -- the focus on the educational setting and the technology centric planning model -- but it nevertheless looks like it has its place in a toolkit for nonprofit technology planning.

Five Year Anniversary of Nonprofit Online News

Nonprofit Online News was founded in early April of 1997. It was started as an outgrowth of our own organization's needs to stay informed about what was happening in the world of social change and social service organizations, and the community of people that make them succeed. In Five Year Anniversary of Nonprofit Online News, I celebrate this milestone with a look at our accomplishments and a preview of what's ahead.

Overcoming the Comfort Zone Syndrome

In Overcoming the Comfort Zone Syndrome, John Darling offers some advice about encouraging the adoption of new technologies. Although his advice is fairly sound, I'm also somewhat concerned. I believe that, when you really look carefully, you find that a lot of the resistance to new tools is entirely rational, worth respecting, and an opportunity for learning all around.

The first month of Nonprofit Online News

Over the course of this month, we plan a series of small improvements and other celebrations in honor of our five years of continuous publication. I'm proud to realize that Nonprofit Online News predated and outlived the Dotcom boom and bust. In some small way, it is a more accurate representation of what the Internet promise is all about. Of course, in April of 1997, our first month of publication, we had a total of only five news items. Only two have suffered linkrot, which is not a bad proportion after five years!
