Stan Hutton leaves About.com

Stan Hutton, an author of The Nonprofit Kit for Dummies, is stepping down as the Guide to the nonprofit sector for About.com. Noting that it's become "harder and harder to run a site about nonprofits in the commercial context" and that he can no longer directly reach his readers because of the consolidation of their newsletters. Thank you, Stan! You contributed a lot!

When Internet Companies Morph

When Internet Companies Morph is a paper by Robert J. Kauffman, Tim Miller, and Bin Wang on how 125 companies changed their strategies to survive the bursting of the dotccom bubble. I've seen a number of nonprofits do the same thing, in effect becoming consulting firms.

David Strom looks at the alarming trend toward content filtering by ISPs. If you publish newsletters or action alerts, there may be large numbers of people who never get your email because their ISP stops it before it ever gets to them.

Life imprisonment for online civil disobedience?

The U.S. House has passed a bill that, in addition to extending the government's ability to spy on us online without a warrant, provides for life imprisonment for computer hacking. This looks to me like it could mean life in prison for acts of online civil disobedience.

Control Your Identity or Microsoft and Intel Will

Jon Udell says Control Your Identity or Microsoft and Intel Will. The impact of invasive technologies from the major technology monopolies is of deep concern to any organization that is outside the mainstream, but the ones I worry most about are human rights organizations.

Creating the New Public Network

I'm frustrated right now with the fact that there are content partnerships I want to pursue but I can't because the technology vendors of my potential partners don't support some basic interoperability protocols. That's why I applaud Tom Lyon when he reminds us that connectivity is the key, in his vision for Creating the New Public Network.

Business Plan Archive

The Business Plan Archive collects Internet boom time business plans. It's a great example of learning from our past and our mistakes. I wish the nonprofit sector were this transparent. And I pray that the nonprofits who are now considering developing or funding new Internet projects take advantage of these lessons.

Reconceptualizing the Digital Divide

In Reconceptualizing the Digital Divide, Mark Warschauer reframes the closure of the digital divide as more a matter of social inclusion. It is sound reasoning that draws upon some good lessons from the literacy movement.

cable could close Internet

In an article on how cable access could close the Internet, Cara Garretson looks at how unregulated and monopolistic control of Internet access means that a small number of companies may have control over not just the service, but the very content that customers receive. Do you want those companies controlling the content that you send to your supporters, or that they send to you?

Sharp decrease in click through on email ads

Email advertising is decreasing in its effectiveness, according to new research. But I think the methodology is flawed. Just look at the language. It's all about advertising.
